About
Penfield
> 2007 Year in Review
- Penfield Children’s Center served 1,379 children and their families in 2007.
- 1,207 children received Birth to 3 early intervention services for
children with developmental disabilities or delays or are at risk
for delays. Penfield continues to provide the majority of our early
intervention services in the children’s homes or other community setting.
- 48 high risk, medically fragile infants and
young children were cared for in Penfield’s
Special Care Nursery -- the oldest and largest
program in the Milwaukee area providing
nursing services, therapy, special education, and childcare for at-risk and
medically fragile children from birth to age three. Penfield’s Special Care
Nursery also provides palliative/hospice care for terminally ill children.
- 128 children under five years of age
were referred to the Behavior Clinic
for aggression, serious tantrums,
oppositional behavior, property
destruction, hyperactivity, self-injury,
separation anxiety and autistic-like
behaviors. Penfield’s Behavior Clinic, a
partnership with Marquette University
School of Education, Department of
Counseling Psychology, identifies young
children with significant behavior
problems and works with their families
to prevent these behaviors from
becoming more serious and long term.
- Penfield’s Parent Mentors helped 77 parents to deal appropriately with the additional pressures
they face raising children with special needs in poverty. Parent Mentors are mothers who have
successfully raised their own special needs children. These trained paraprofessionals, one
African-American, one Hispanic, working one-on-one, help parents and caregivers of Penfield
children meet their own basic needs (adequate food, housing, employment, personal safety) while
caring for a child with developmental delays or disabilities.
- 30 children age three to 18
received services in
Penfield’s Outpatient Clinic.
- 114 children ages four
weeks to nine years were
enrolled in Penfield’s Child
Care Program.
- Penfield’s therapists and special
education teachers continue to provide
direct service and/or staff support to
community child-care centers
throughout Milwaukee County.
- 1,938 Penfield family members participated in Penfield’s parent
support and education programs and
family social events and outings in
2007.
Penfield Children’s Center hosted 39 parent and family events in 2007:
- 13 transition planning
conferences to help parents plan
for their children’s future after
they graduate from Penfield at
age three
(113 attended)
- 13 parent education/training programs
(159 attended)
- 7 family social events and field trips
(1,650 attended)
- 4 parent advisory group meetings
(16 attended).
- 711 parents, children and extended family members
enjoyed Penfield’s annual Family Holiday
Celebration.
- 250 volunteers provided 4,560 hours of service to
Penfield in 2007. Volunteers serve in the Special Care
Nursery and classrooms, at parent/family programs, at
fund-raising events and in the governance of the
agency.
